The Commencement of Huginn

Wings Unfolded: The Huginn Mission Begins on the International Space Station

In a remarkable display of international collaboration, the International Space Station (ISS) welcomed its newest crew members on August 27th, as Crew-7 successfully docked with the orbiting laboratory. This historic mission marks the beginning of ESA astronaut Andreas Mogensen’s Huginn mission, during which he will conduct a series of groundbreaking experiments aimed at advancing our understanding of climate, health, and space research for the benefit of humanity on Earth.

Andreas Mogensen, along with his fellow crew members NASA astronaut Jasmin Moghbeli, JAXA astronaut Satoshi Furukawa, and Roscosmos astronaut Konstantin Borisov, embarked on their journey to the ISS on August 26th. After a smooth journey, they arrived at their destination on August 27th at 14:16 BST/15:16 CEST. The successful docking of Crew-7 with the Space Station marked the commencement of a new era of scientific exploration.

Over the course of his six-month stay onboard the ISS, Andreas Mogensen will undertake more than 30 European experiments. These experiments cover a wide range of scientific disciplines, from climate studies to health research. One particularly exciting experiment will involve Andreas controlling robots on Earth from the orbital laboratory. This cutting-edge research has the potential to revolutionize how we interact with robots in space and on Earth.

As we approach mid-September, Andreas Mogensen will assume the role of Space Station commander, taking over from the current commander Sergey Prokopyev. This transition is a testament to Andreas’ exceptional skills and expertise, as he becomes the first European astronaut to hold this prestigious position. Andreas will remain in command for the remainder of his mission, which will span a little over five months – the longest duration ever for a European astronaut.

On Thursday, Andreas Mogensen will hold his inaugural in-flight call for the Huginn mission. During this call, he will have the opportunity to answer questions from Earth and share his insights about his initial experiences on the Space Station. This exciting event will provide a unique glimpse into the daily life of an astronaut and the challenges they face while conducting groundbreaking research in the extreme conditions of space.

The Huginn mission represents a significant milestone for European space exploration and demonstrates the continued commitment of international space agencies to push the boundaries of scientific knowledge. Andreas Mogensen’s presence onboard the ISS will undoubtedly lead to significant advancements in various fields and pave the way for future missions and collaborations.

As we eagerly await updates from Andreas Mogensen and the rest of Crew-7, it is evident that this extraordinary mission will unlock new frontiers in space exploration and inspire generations to come. The unfolding of wings on the International Space Station signifies the soaring aspirations of humanity as we strive to unravel the mysteries of our universe.
