ESA Celebrates Female Leadership and Gender Equality Initiatives for International Women’s Day

In recognition of International Women’s Day on March 8, the European Space Agency (ESA) is highlighting the achievements of its recent female leadership recruits, including Céline Begon, Christine Boelsche, Céline Folsché, and Ildiko Raczne Szoke. This year’s theme, #GiveToGain, reinforces the necessity of mutual support and community-building as vital components in the pursuit of gender equality, where opportunities for advancement can be expanded for all.

The ESA places considerable emphasis on gender balance as a key element of its Diversity and Inclusiveness strategy. Over recent years, the agency has initiated various measures aimed at enhancing female representation and fostering an inclusive work environment. Initiatives include improved recruitment practices and internal training programs designed to reduce bias, alongside the establishment of women’s professional networks. As a result of these efforts, the representation of women within ESA has improved notably; by the end of 2025, women accounted for 37% of new hires, nearing the goal of 40% set by the Agenda 2025 initiative. Moreover, female presence in senior management has markedly increased, rising to 27% from just 8% in 2016.

To illustrate the diverse backgrounds of the women leading at the ESA, four newly appointed leaders are spotlighted. Céline Begon, who now serves as Head of the EU Relations Office and the ESA Brussels Office, has extensive experience in defense and space affairs, having previously held various strategic roles within the French government and at Thales Alenia Space.

Christine Boelsche, the agency’s Chief Digital and Information Officer, brings a wealth of knowledge in digital transformation from her previous work in the pharmaceutical and life sciences sectors. Her focus is on aligning technology and processes to support ESA’s goals and operational resilience.

Céline Folsché, leading the Public International Law Division, advises on governance and international agreements, drawing upon her rich background in legal affairs at the OECD and various governmental institutions.

Ildiko Raczne Szoke, with over three decades of HR experience, now heads the Human Resources Department at ESA. She aims to revitalize HR policies and cultivate a workforce prepared for future challenges, while fostering a culture of inclusion and high performance.

These initiatives and the successes of the women in leadership roles exemplify ESA’s commitment to enhancing gender equality and fostering an environment conducive to growth and advancement within the agency.
