ESA to Highlight Space’s Role in Europe’s Security at Munich Security Conference

The European Space Agency (ESA) is set to participate in the Munich Security Conference (MSC), a significant global platform for discussing international security matters, scheduled to take place from February 13 to 15 at the Hotel Bayerischer Hof in Munich. ESA’s Director General, Josef Aschbacher, will engage with high-ranking political leaders, industry representatives, and security specialists to emphasize the critical role that space systems play in enhancing Europe’s competitiveness, resilience, and strategic independence.

Aschbacher’s involvement in this year’s conference underscores a growing acknowledgment of the importance of space in Europe’s security framework. Recent decisions made during the ESA Council’s Ministerial meeting (CM25), which included robust backing for the European Resilience from Space (ERS) initiative, alongside long-term objectives outlined in ESA’s Strategy 2040, highlight the agency’s commitment to bolstering Europe’s autonomy and operational capabilities.

The 62nd MSC, chaired by Ambassador Wolfgang Ischinger, is anticipated to attract over 1,000 participants, including numerous heads of state and leaders from various international organizations. This year’s agenda will delve into a range of space-focused issues, such as the evolving impact of innovation on the intersection of space and security, the increasing strategic importance of the Moon and cislunar regions, the future trajectory of Europe’s space industry, and the broader dynamics that will shape the next era of global challenges. Detailed information about the conference program will be accessible on the official website of the event’s organizers.
